Signs & Symptoms

Shoulder pain is a common complaint that can affect people of all ages.

Because the shoulder is a highly mobile joint, the increase in movement can come at the expense of stability, which can cause a number of different issues.

Our Chiropractors are experienced and trained in the assessment, diagnosis & treatment of musculoskeletal Shoulder problems.

The most common signs & symptoms are:

  • Pain at the front, back or deep within the shoulder joint
  • Pain along the top of the shoulder
  • Pain when moving the shoulder or arm
  • Reduced movement of the shoulder or arm
  • Loss of movement or “frozen” shoulder
  • Feeling of weakness in the shoulder or arm
  • Feeling of instability at the shoulder
  • Pins and needles, numbness or tingling in the shoulder or down the arm

causes of shoulder pain

As the Shoulder is a very mobile joint, there are many possible causes for your pain and dysfunction. Some of the most common causes are:

  • Traumatic injuries and sprains
  • Degenerative changes
  • Nerve injuries
  • Soft tissue injuries e.g., muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursa (bursitis)
  • Repetitive strain injuries
  • Referred pain from the abdomen, heart and lungs

how to get relief?

The evidence suggests that effective treatment for a lot of shoulder conditions consists of a combination of manual therapy and exercise.

Our Chiropractors take a methodical approach to shoulder pain.

We start with:

  • Full History and Examination
  • Range of motion of the shoulder and surrounding joints
  • Examination of joints and nerves relating to the painful area

If the examination indicates the shoulder is the source of the pain, we will proceed with treatment. If any further investigation needs to be performed, you will be referred for imaging (X-rays) or referred to your GP.

Shoulder Pain

treatment options

Our Chiropractic team explain their top approaches to treatment.

  1. Chiropractic Adjustments (Spinal Manipulations & Mobilisations) – These allow movement to occur at the joints and muscles, and can release pressure on the structures around the painful area. For the Shoulder, these are mainly performed at the Mid & Upper back area, to give more movement to the shoulders.
  2. Soft Tissue Muscle Release (Trigger point therapy, Dry needling, Vibration massage) – The muscles surrounding the shoulder area may also feel stiff as they are protecting the painful area.
  3. Strengthening/Stretching Exercises – These can be gentle movements or more complex movements depending on how much movement or discomfort you have. The aim is to strengthen the surrounding structures of the shoulder so you can get back to your everyday life and prevent the pain from happening again.
