Navigating healthcare options can raise questions about whether seeing multiple practitioners at once is beneficial.
When it comes to Chiropractic and Physiotherapy, both professions offer unique approaches to musculoskeletal health.
So, should you combine them? Here’s what to consider.
understanding chiropractic care
Chiropractors focus on diagnosing and treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine.Â
They use hands-on techniques like spinal manipulation and adjustments to restore joint mobility and reduce pain.
Depending on the practitioner, they may also use complimentary things like Dry Needling, Muscle release and Exercise/Rehab plans & stretches for home.
exploring physiotherapy
Physiotherapists take a broad approach to rehabilitation, using exercise therapy, manual techniques, and modalities like ultrasound or dry needling.Â
Their focus is on restoring physical function, reducing pain and preventing future injuries.
They may have a large population that are recovering from surgery or major injuries such as Stroke or Joint replacements.
the individual practitioner
Because there is now a lot of modalities that are shared between the professions, the type of care you get may be up to the individual person who treats you. For example, some Chiropractors perform Dry needling which was traditionally used by Physiotherapists more. And some Physiotherapists use joint manipulation which is usually used by Chiropractors more.
the benefits of seeing both
1. Comprehensive Care – Â Chiropractic has a big focus on joint mobility, while physiotherapy mainly targets muscles , which can be a great combination for your body.
2. Faster Recovery: By addressing both joint function and muscle support, dual care may speed up recovery from injuries.
3. Prevention: Both disciplines emphasize prevention through movement, education and exercises which can reduce the risk of reinjury.
the potential drawbacks
1. Money – Seeing two practitioners at one time can be a large financial commitment. We often will have patients that will alternate one week with their Physio and the other week with their Chiro if they are getting benefits from both, but to spread the cost out.
2. Time –Â Multiple appointments in a week can be challenging to fit into a busy schedule.
3. Conflicting Advice – Although uncommon, there could be potential to get differing advice from 2 different practitioners. They may see it from different angles or have a different knowledge base.
