Muscle-related lower back pain is a common issue that affects people of all ages and lifestyles.

Whether it’s a sharp pain triggered by sudden movement or a dull ache that persists throughout the day, lower back pain can be frustrating, limiting mobility and affecting daily life.

Understanding its causes, recognizing the symptoms, and exploring treatment options can make a big difference in managing and preventing this type of pain.

causes of muscle related lower back pain

There are several causes of muscle-related lower back pain. One of the most common is muscle strain—often from acute trauma like lifting heavy objects, sudden twisting or jerking (injury and falls), or repetitive strains.

Over time, these movements can lead to overstretching or microscopic tearing of muscle fibres in the lower back.

For people who sit for long periods with no breaks in between, the lower back muscles may weaken or tighten, contributing to chronic pain.

Increasing load too fast in sports and physical activities. Especially in sports that demand repeated bending, lifting, or twisting (like weightlifting, golf, or running) can also place stress on the lower back, leading to pain and muscle fatigue. If we increase these sports too fast or too intensely – we can strain the muscles of the lower back.

Another factor to consider is the strength of the muscles of our back, which support the spine. We need to focus on strength exercises to decrease the chance of injury. This also helps with movement of the spine which keeps the joints functioning well.

There are a number of techniques to use at home to relieve muscle related lower back pain.

Firstly, using a small roller or ball to roll out any stiff or stubborn knots in the lower back can help relieve pain!

Secondly, using a massage cream can also soothe the muscles.

Alternatively, performing some at home stretches can also improve flexibility or mobility while releasing tension.

If pain persists for more than a few weeks or is severe, consulting with a healthcare professional is important.

In some cases, they may recommend additional treatments such as massage therapy, acupuncture or referral to your GP to manage pain.
