At Chiro & Co. we not only deal with spine and joint issues but also issues in the limbs such as Arms & Forearms. Examples include Carpal Tunnel, Tennis Elbow, Golfer’s Elbow and Thumb Sprains, as these are very common.
Why does forearm pain occur?
The forearm is a highly complex area of the body.Â
It is also susceptible to overuse injuries due to the repetitive nature of some jobs such as Tradespeople, Office workers, Baristas & Artists.Â
For example:
- Turning motion with a hand toolÂ
- Gripping a shovel
- Repetitive mouse or computer work
- Holding onto a pen or brush
Types of forearm pain
We will highlight here the most common types of Arm and Forearm pain.
We treat these conditions each week in our clinic.
Tennis elbow & Golfer's elbow
Our forearms have tendons that attach to the outer and inner part of the elbows which can sometimes become inflamed and irritated from repetitive movements putting more stress onto those muscles. Â
Common symptoms include:
- Persistent pain on the outside (Tennis Elbow) and inside (Golfer’s Elbow)
- Difficulty gripping objects, such as a mouse or phone
- Pain that worsens with repetitive tasks
Ergonomic adjustments to your workstation, regular breaks, stretching and strengthening exercises are some good preventative strategies.
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition where the median nerve, which runs through the wrist, becomes compressed.
This is common among people who spend long hours typing, using a mouse, or working on tablets and smartphones.
Symptoms we commonly see include:
- Tingling, numbness to the thumb, index and middle fingers
- Weakness in the hand making it difficult to grip objects
- Pain and tenderness from the wrist to the forearm.Â
Prevention strategies include using ergonomic tools such as an ergonomic keyboard and mouse to reduce the strain on your wrists, using a wrist rest while typing and regular breaks to stretch your forearms and wrists.
thumb sprains
Thumb sprains are often caused by overuse or sudden trauma.Â
These injuries have become increasingly common with the rise of smartphone and tech use. Texting, gaming and scrolling place repetitive stress on the thumb’s ligaments.Â
This basically can lead to microtrauma, inflammation and eventual sprains, especially when users adopt awkward hand positions or use excessive pressure while gripping their devices.Â
Common symptoms include: pain, swelling and difficulty with pinching or gripping activities. To prevent or manage thumb sprains, it’s important to incorporate good ergonomic adjustments, take regular breaks, stretch the forearm and wrist muscles.Â
what treatment do we do?
At Chiro & Co., treatment for these common injuries include soft tissue therapy such as dry needling, cupping, trigger point release, gentle joint mobilisations and some rehabilitation exercises to strengthen the area to help prevent recurrence.
Remember, the best way to avoid these injuries is to balance screen time with physical activity and strength exercises for these areas.
At Chiro & Co., we encourage you to pay attention to your body and make changes to your daily routine to promote long-term health and well-being.
