Some new patients are unsure what to expect for their first visit to a chiropractor, and may even feel nervous.

If you have ever visited other healthcare providers, then your chiropractic visit will be a familiar experience as the setting and intake procedure will be similar.

Chiropractic first visit

We are here to help & answer any questions you may have.

This page is intended to give some insight into the First Visit to ease your nerves or just to simply understand our process.

Our first appointments typically consist of:

 – History taking & consultation

– Physical examination

– Treatment plan

What happens during the consultation?

Our initial consultation will require filling out a questionnaire regarding your current health and previous medical history, which is similar to other healthcare providers.

Typically, the chiropractor will clarify where you are experiencing discomfort and may check other health factors like pulse, breathing rate and blood pressure.

What happens during the physical examination?

Your chiropractor will begin with a general physical examination depending on your complaint, followed by a focused examination on the affected area and supporting soft tissue structures. During this examination, we are observing your body’s structure and other visible indicators of injury.

Further chiropractic tests may be necessary to assess the affected area, such as having you move in a specific manner, posture analysis, or assess motion of the affected body part.

We may also perform orthopedic examinations, which consist of moving the affected area to detect discomfort within the joints or soft tissues. A neurological examination is also common, which includes assessing the function of your strength, sensation and reflexes.

All of these components of the physical examination help build a clinical picture of you. If any further investigation needs to be performed, you will be referred for imaging (X-rays) or referred to your GP.

what will the treatment consist of?

The treatment will be specific to your individual case but may include:

  • Spinal manipulations or mobilisations
  • Muscle release (Trigger point therapy, Dry needling, Vibration massage)
  • Exercise prescription
  • Stretches, home advice
  • Ergonomic advice

how long will the first visit take?

Generally, an initial appointment will take around 30 minutes, including a treatment. However, this depends on the severity of your presentation and may take up to 40 minutes.

Our regular follow up treatments run for 15 minutes or 20 minutes with dry needling.

What do I wear to my appointment?

The ideal clothing is loose, comfortable clothing as you may be required to lay down on the padded table.

Avoiding belts or sharp items that could catch the table padding and clothing that restricts easy movement.

You want to be as comfortable as possible to perform exercises and move around with ease.
